Building Mailing Lists
To receive information about a given building, you must be added to the Building Users Google Groups. These lists are auto-generated by the location of each employee's office assignment. Reach out to the appropriate Building Manager list above if you need to be manually added to a building list other than where your office is located:
If you have any questions or concerns regarding mailstops, please reach out to CSDOps@lbl.gov.
Building Management: Building Managers (ESA) and Facility Area Managers (FAMS)(Facilities)
Each building at the Lab has a building manager that is assigned by the major occupant of that building and a Facilities Area Manager (FAM) that is assigned by Facilities. The Building Manager and FAM work together to ensure that there is clear communication with the building occupants about maintenance, repairs, shutdowns, and other activities that can impact normal building operations.
Building Managers (ESA)
Each building at the Lab has a Building Manager that is assigned by one of the major Divisions/Areas that occupy that building. However, most of the buildings at the Lab are occupied by several Divisions/Areas, thus it can be tricky to understand who to contact for issues that arise in a given building. For the Chemical Sciences Division, we have established mailing lists that will reach the key personnel as follows:
For building-related issues, please get in touch with the appropriate team by contacting us through the following ESA Building Management email lists:

The FAMs are assigned by regions in the Facility Regional Map.
Equipment Installation
The Scientific Equipment Installation (SEI) Team in PIMD can help with scoping the installation of laboratory equipment in your labs. Here are the details from the SEI webpage:
Scientific Equipment Installation
Published on March 26, 2023 by PIMD Admin.
The Scientific Equipment Installation (SEI) Team is a partnership between the Projects & Infrastructure Modernization Division (PIMD) and the Facilities Division to efficiently assess, plan, and execute scientific equipment installations and projects in support of the research divisions.
Why contact the SEI Team?
Some scientific equipment may come with complex infrastructure support requirements. And what may appear to be a simple equipment installation may actually be more complex than it first appears.
Key considerations in bringing in or moving equipment into a space include:
Equipment Specifications (electrical power, temperature and humidity): The equipment may have utility requirements that cannot be met by existing infrastructure – especially if it requires additional power, new ventilation, or strict temperature and humidity ranges. In such cases significant modifications to the existing infrastructure may be required to prepare the space for the equipment.
Building Code Compliance: Many legacy building systems may not comply with modern building codes. Any modification of existing spaces for the purpose of installing scientific equipment, even minor ones, may require updates to electrical panels, fire safety systems, and other systems to bring the space up to current safety standards.
Electrical Safety: Any new equipment that is installed at Berkeley Lab must be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). Many foreign-made equipment may not comply which means the equipment must be certified on-site and be subject to specialized inspections to meet safety requirements prior to shipping and installation. These considerations may need to be accounted for in the purchase agreement.
Waste Generation: Disturbance or demolition of existing infrastructure also may disturb legacy hazardous materials that must be abated or handled appropriately, which can complicate the overall installation.
Identifying these needs early (ideally before the equipment is ordered, or the funding is requested) will prevent delays in the installation.
The SEI Team can:
help understand the feasibility of installing equipment in an existing space;
propose potential spaces for the installations that minimize the need for infrastructure modifications;
help identify necessary technical specifications for the equipment before ordering;
provide an estimated cost and timeframe for the installation, including any pre-installation infrastructure work; and/or
help tailor the scope of the infrastructure work to fit your budget
What can I expect?
Depending on equipment and the current state of the space, the work may be a simple installation, a complex installation, or become a full infrastructure project, as summarized in the table below. Your Facility Area Manager (FAM) can help determine whether your equipment needs may be a complex installation or a project that should be assessed and managed by the SEI team. Because these efforts can take months to more than a year, please contact the SEI team as early as possible.

Space Management
Space Management Policy (RPM) outlines the Lab's policy on space utilization review, changes in the use of space (both lab and office), requests for space, funding space renovation and moves, and off-site space.
Office Locations
Lab Phonebook can be used to look up employee contact information, including their office assignment.
Edit your profile information by logging in to HRIS to update your office location.
Key Plans: floor plans that show each building by floor level and are available with varying levels of detail including room number, square footage, space use (lab/office/storage/common areas, etc), division allocation (color-coded), and employee name (for offices).
Space Reports: the Business Analytics & Reporting (BAR) System at the Lab offers a variety of space reports. The most commonly used reports are below.
Area Sheet: query by building; useful for quickly looking up the building numbers for UCB Campus Buildings (ie: Tan Hall is B850).
Building Detail: query by building and learn the year it was built, the number of floors, square footage by space type (lab, office, common, etc), and division assignment.
Building Summary by Division: useful for finding the different buildings a given division occupies between the Hill, Campus, and Offsite locations.
Room Details and Occupants (office): provides details about office assignments for a given building or division.
Rooms by Project: provides details about the PID/AID for any given room by building for a given Division, PID, PI, and other criteria (see link).
Space Metrics Employee Validation: generates a spreadsheet for all active Lab personnel (including affiliates) and indicates their office location, division, position description, and office type.
Lab Maps: Interactive and static pdf
Contact Josh Ballesteros, ESA Infrastructure Manager, for space questions or requests.
Technical Area Designation (TAD)
A Technical Area Designation (TAD) must be obtained before Facilities can perform work, corrective and preventative maintenance activities in a technical area.
To update your TAD information:
Click on "Search Rooms" and query by Building, Division, or Authorizer.
Select a single or multiple rooms and click "Edit Selected" button.
In the Edit Room/s Detail screen indicate whether or not release is required and release conditions, if any. Provide TWO authorized releasers for locations requiring release. Indicate which is primary.
Click on "Send e-mail" for quickly sending email to the Facilities Space Planning group for any room (keyplan) related details.
Technical Area Designation is intended to facilitate communication between the technical area contact person (e.g. area safety leader, facility manager, lab lead PI, work lead) and non-resident worker(s) regarding hazards that are associated within the workspace operation(s)/experiment(s) (i.e. not building/facility infrastructure)
